Emergent Phenomena

Emergent Phenomena is about facing uncertainty and trying to make sense of things beyond our control.

To make these images I start by painting with light sensitive cyanotype chemistry. I interfere with the chemistry as it dries, adding salt, diluting it with water, and angling the paper to cause the liquid to flow and pool. As the chemistry dries it settles in unpredictable ways. I then expose the paper to sunlight. This will make the image turn a permanent blue. Next I lay out a grid in gold ink. As I work the grid will be influenced by the abstract background. It will skirt around valleys, cut across waves, dive in and out of clouds. Finally I fill in sections of the grid with gold watercolor paint. As the grid fills in a pattern will emerge: cityscapes, circuit boards, or the crescent of a waning moon.
