Out Here, In the Unknown

This body of work is about finding out what is on the other side of uncertainty. It is about hope, optimism, and loneliness. Looking out at an infinite sea of shining lights in the the darkness and imagining all that could be out there. It is about the struggle between possibility and our desire to seek shelter in the familiar.

To make the cyanotypes in this collection I started by applying a heavy coat of liquid cyanotype sensitizer to watercolor paper. I would then manipulate the still wet surface by bending the paper, adding water to dilute the chemistry, flicking on more sensitizer, and adding salt to pull in the liquid. I was able to create a flowing, mottled surface that involves chance as much as intention. Once the cyanotypes were developed I would respond to the images created by building areas of small dots using a gold paint marker. As I worked with the marker I'd fill in dots along paths. The resulting trails either creating a sense of motion or coalescing into a celestial body. No two dots overlap or touch, with each isolated element making up a greater whole.
