Cleveland in January is typically grey. The sunlight I need to make my exposures is absent until early spring. Normally this means a period of dormancy when it comes to making new images. Sowing Seeds came about when I tried to lean into the idea of not having enough light. The light sensitive paper was set out on my dim basement workbench. The only light was from a small glass block window. Every morning I would come down into the cold basement and shift the leaves and petals around. Each image was made over the course of weeks worth of exposure. They are records of time. Week’s worth of light collected and used to record the shadows of last year’s greenery while thinking about the promise of a coming spring. Sowing Seeds in the Dark is about patience and gentle hope.
